About Our Dogs

The Pomeranian is lively and eager to learn. They get along well with other household pets if given a slow and proper introduction. They make wonderful companions for families with older, well-behaved children and the elderly.

Character

The Pomeranian is a compact, active toy breed. They are intelligent, extremely loyal to their family, and loving. They are eager to please, gentle, and affectionate. They also exhibit an inquisitive expression and curiosity.

Does your Pomeranian bark, howl, and cry whenever you leave the house? Separation anxiety is extreme anxiety experienced by your dog when you are away from him.

Temperament

The Pomeranian is confident, commanding, and outgoing. Due to the Pomeranians small stature they are not recommended for homes with small children as they may become temperamental. They make excellent guard dogs and will sound a bark when they sense danger.

Care

In addition to grooming it is important for Pomeranians to receive excellent dental care. They are prone to tooth loss; so regular cleaning is a must. Dry food is recommended to aid in keeping teeth and gums healthy.

If your dog is displaying behavior uncharacteristic of his normal actions, call the Vet.

Coat

The Pomeranians long double coat requires brushing at least once weekly. It is important to lift and part the top coat and brush the cottony undercoat as well. This will reduce shedding. Frequent brushing can damage the coat.

Training

Pomeranians respond best to firm commands and are quick to learn. They are easily trained in obedience. Their barking must be controlled or they will do so incessantly. They may be difficult in housebreaking, but with consistency and praise do very well either going outside or in a litter box. Teaching your dog to sit, lie down, and stay is vital to the training of your new puppy. There are several accepted methods of house training your new Pomeranian puppy. Consider crate training if you need to adapt your dog to a safe and confined environment for various safety and comfort reasons.

Activity

The Pomeranian requires short walks and play time with other pets and family. They have the capability to learn tricks if done with patience and time. They may become bored if they are not given enough to do. They are excellent for apartment living and homes with small yards. Socialization is one of the single most important things you can do for your puppy.

AUSSIEPOMS:

An Aussie Pom is the mix between a purebred standard, mini, or toy Australian Shepherd and Pomeranian. They are bred to be companion dogs because of their manageable size and amicable temperament. They are known to be loyal, trainable, and affectionate. Because they are a social breed, they do not like to be alone for long periods of time and need regular exercise. Aussie Poms have a relatively long average life span of 12 to 15 years. Their weight, measurements, and color vary widely, but will generally look like an undersized Shepherd with Pomeranian features and Australian Shepherd or Pomeranian markings. They have soft, full, and straight coats that require regular brushing. Currently, Aussie Poms are unable to join the American Kennel Club roster of purebreds, but are growing in popularity in North America and Europe.

Aussi Pom Breed Appearance

Aussie Poms typically look like small Shepherds with fox-like, Pomeranian facial features. The size depends on whether the Pomeranian is bred with a regular, mini, or toy Australian Shepherd. We only breed with Toy Aussies in order to keep our dogs under 13" and 6 to 10#s. Generally, the breed is medium-sized OURS ARE TOY SIZE.. The average weight is 10 to 30 pounds and the average height is 12 to 17 inches tall. The breadth of coat variations within each parent breed account for the Aussie Pom’s range of patterns and colors. Red merle , Blue merle and tri-color (black, white, and tan), are more rare. The tail is medium length and feathered with a soft coat. Aussie Poms have an alert and intelligent expression, with high-set pendent ears, a tapered muzzle, and medium-sized eyes.

Aussi Pom Breed Maintenance

Aussie Poms do a fair amount of shedding due their medium length coat. Owners can reduce shedding through regular brushing and monthly baths with shampoo and conditioner. Given this breed’s tendency for plaque buildup, Aussie Poms (like all dogs) should have their teeth brushed daily, as well as nails clipped 1 to 2 times a month. Some owners prefer to clip their Aussie Pom’s coat around the eyes, ears, paws and sanitary cut, but regular cutting and styling is not usually necessary. Never shave them as this could ruen their coat. Owners should, however, take special care to inspect Aussie Poms after they have been outside for debris that might get caught in their ample coats.

Aussi Pom Activity Requirements

Aussie Poms are known to be very friendly and amicable to people, including children and other dogs. The breed is affectionate and will most likely develop strong attachments to its primary owner and other family members. Like many Shepherd varieties, it is a loyal watchdog and will bark if there is cause for “alarm” or a perceived threat. Even so, well-adapted Aussie Poms are not known to be over-territorial or aggressive to strangers. The Aussie Pom’s affable nature and ability to make fast friends makes it an easy and wonderful family pet. Beyond this, Aussie Poms are regarded as an extremely trainable breed. They are very responsive to discipline, especially at an early age. Though the breed is generally adaptable, it is very social and does not like to be left alone for long periods of time. Consequently, Aussie Poms thrive best in active environments with lots of people time.

These dogs are the result of the breeding of two purebred dogs. Half of each dog is the mother’s breed, and the other half is the father’s breed.

Example: a labradoodle whose mother is a purebred labrador and father a purebred poodle.

These are F1 backcrossed dogs. They result from the mating of an F1 parent and a P parent. This is used to intensify traits found in the P parent’s breed.

F2 dogs are the offsets resulting from the mating of two F1 hybrids.

These are second-generation backcrossed dogs. Each F2b dog is the offset of an F1 parent and an F1 backcrossed (F1b) parent.

Offsets coming from the mating of two F2 hybrid parents.

Multi Generation
An F3 or higher-generation hybrid dog crossed with an F3 or higher-generation hybrid dog. This is a more generic nomenclature and is mostly expressed using the generation of each parent, such as F4 Labradoodle x F2 Cockapoo.

Example: a labradoodle whose mother is a labradoodle F3 and father a labradoodle F5.

AUSSIEPOMS:

Not only adorable, but have great temperaments and are very smart! Make excellent obedience and agility competition dogs. Not as yappy as a Pomeranian and doesn't shed as much as an Aussie.

I was updating on our website this morning and ran onto this and thought it was worth posting again so we don't forget the truth. This is a Statement directly from Sandy Travis.

Hi, I'm Sandy Travis founder of the "Travis Dogs" and I would like to tell you the history of these dogs. In 1962, I was almost 16 yrs. old and I bought a Australian Shepherd puppy from a friend of mine at the Torrance Rodeo. I knew this puppy's parents and was anxious to get her to someday breed to my Aussie male. I soon realized this wasn't going to happen as she "Puppy" only grew to
be approx. 11". In 1968, I found a small Aussie male and I bred Puppy to him.
The whole litter stayed small, 9" to 13". Realizing their popularity, I talked with a Vet and he advised me to "inbreed, line breed and cull", so I did and overall I was very happy with the small size and conformation. Although I never asked if "Puppy's" parents were registered, nor did I ask if the male I bred her to was registered, at that time in my life it wasn't important to me to have a registered dog, but I did care that they were in fact Australian Shepherds.
The general public that would see these little dogs immediately called themMiniature Aussies or Aussie puppies. It wasn't until years later that the Mini Clubs were formed that the two sizes were introduced, the Toy and the Miniature.
Under those guide lines, almost all of my dogs were Toys. I knew Bob and Doris Cordova through Quarter Horse Shows and they fell in love with my little dogs.
In 1978 they bought a puppy from me and named him Cordovas Spike and he received his Australian Shepherd papers with NSDR and than later got the Miniature added to his papers. (we all were very proud of the Miniature on the papers) Later with the addition of the Toy/Mini sizes, the dogs papers would state one or the
other depending on the size of the dog. Although Spike qualified as a Toy, his papers were never changed. Spike was beautiful with a lot of refinement to fit his small size of approx. 13". So you see, the Toy was the first to be bred to the Standard to get the Mini. I must tell everyone how thankful I am to Doris and how important it was to her to have registered Australian Shepherds no
matter what size they were.
